A commonplace book for people who read too much.

Loam keeps what you read, think and clip, then hands it back when you need it.

A library card catalog drawer full of index cards, one pulled forward

Notes were never meant to be filed away.

Renaissance readers kept a commonplace book: a notebook where passages, ideas and observations were copied down and indexed by topic. The point was rereading. Notes were meant to be returned to, argued with and combined into something new.

Most note apps are good at the copying and useless at the return. Loam is built for the return. It links what you write to what you wrote before, and each morning it puts a few old notes back in front of you.

What it does

Five things, done carefully. Nothing that needs a tutorial.

  1. Capture from anywhere

Share sheet, browser clipper, a forwarded email, a voice memo. Everything lands in one inbox as a note.

  2. Link as you write

Type two brackets to link any note. Backlinks appear on their own, so old thinking attaches itself to new.

  3. Old notes come back

Each morning Loam surfaces three notes related to what you wrote yesterday. Nothing to schedule, nothing to tag.

  4. Plain files on your disk

Every note is a Markdown file in a folder you choose. Sync is end-to-end encrypted and entirely optional.

  5. Search that understands

Full-text and meaning-based search across notes, PDFs and web clips. Ask for the idea, not the exact words.
